Any Time We're Having Fun!
Being The Promotions Diva, is a very unique position. I'm usually the first to arrive at an event, and the last to leave. I set up the sound, decorate the area, greet our listeners, and hopefully give them a chance to win something nice.
Sometimes I am the host at some events as well. Which means, I do all the set up in high heels and dress clothes, so that I can look half-way decent as your host. Other times, a DRC shirt and shorts are my attire. Occasionally you may hear me on the air reporting from a particular event. For instance, Groundhog Day is one of my favorites. Every February 2ND, I'll let you know if our resident Groundhog Chuckles, sees his shadow or not! I would say the best part about being The Promotions Diva is being on the road, and meeting our listeners face to face. It takes a lot of planning and coordinating to put a promotion together, and it's my job to make it successful. Of, course I don't do it alone. Many thanks to my fearless leader, Grahame, Jazzy Jill and Amiee (The Promotions Pixie.)
One of the most important parts of my job is supporting the many charity events we sponsor in our community. The Race in The Park, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Lupus Society, The Alzheimer Association, American Heart Association, Autism Speaks, Special Olympics, Food Share, MS Society, and UNICO are some of the organizations that I have worked with. It's always a great feeling to work for a radio station that actually cares about the people in the community.
Together, we can do anything!
See you on the road!
More About Lisa:
As a Connecticut native, I had the great opportunity of growing up with WDRC. I would spend hours with my radio and cassette tape recorder, making tapes of all my favorite songs. In Middle School I developed a knack for writing. I would entertain my classmates with short stories and poetry. By High School, the music world had expanded, and the Rock 'N Roll our parents listened to had evolved into Rock and Heavy Metal. I continued to entertain my classmates with my writing, although now, instead of short stories and poems I was writing "off the wall" satires, and drawing comic strips about the teachers. I also fell in love with the theater, and joined the Drama Club. I loved being in the plays, especially the comedies! I realized that I could make people laugh, sometimes without even trying. In my senior year, one of my essays made an impression on my English teacher, and that year I was awarded a scholarship to attend Wesleyan University, where I studied creative writing. I was still in high School, and everyone seemed so much older. Then, I discovered that Wesleyan had it's own radio station. My friend and I would hang out, and help the DJ pick out songs.
After graduation, I headed to Manchester Community College, majoring in Communications. The college didn't have a radio station, so I began to concentrate on my studies. While in college I took a sales and marketing job in Wallingford, CT. The marketing part was fine, but I had trouble with the sales. I just hated pushing people into buying a product that they didn't want or need.
I found gratitude on the weekends, helping my friend, a local DJ spin records at the dance clubs. Disco was still in, and the mixes were hot.
Within that year, I met and started dating my husband Gino. After a couple of years of dating we were married. I settled in to a regular 9 to 5 job, as the only left-handed engraver around. At first it was creative and very challenging. Then, the company purchased CNC machines that engrave with the push of a button. Sure, it was interesting at first, but then it just got monotonous.
I left that job to be home with our beautiful new baby, Stephanie. Raising a child is like living your life all over again. the first words, the first steps.......the playground! Taking care of her was my number one priority. And I loved every minute of it. When Stephanie went off to school, I returned part-time to my old job. After a while, I became frustrated with the same old grind at work. At least they let us have radios at our work areas. Then, it was decided because of safety reasons there would be no more radios at work, ever!
I can't say that was the one reason I left, but it did get me thinking about actually doing something I enjoyed.
Since College, I had taken a few business courses, and computer classes, but nothing that really sparked an interest. Then, I thought of my first love: Radio! Not wanting to go back to a four year school, I enrolled in The Connecticut School of Broadcasting. It was there, that I found my true passion - entertaining! After graduating from CSB, I took a job at another local radio station, but at the time they didn't really have much work for me. Then, I got a call from WDRC. They read my resume and wanted me to come in. After about three interviews, they hired me in promotions. I went to work the next day!
As I sat in the seat of the DRC-FM van going to my first event, I couldn't believe my luck. I was working for the same radio station that I grew up with. Sure, there were other stations in between, but at last I had come full circle, back to the type of local and personable radio that I loved so much. Now, I can actually say that I love my job, and what I do.
When I'm not working I enjoy spending time with my family, and cuddling with my Pit Bull, Candi.
